Ashton Gate Stadium

In the Spring/Summer of 2016, EvoEnergy’s expertise was called upon to install a 117 kWp solar PV array on the roof of Ashton Gate Stadium; the home of both Bristol City FC and Bristol Rugby Club.

The PV installation was part of a joint initiative between Bristol City Council (BCC) and the stadium owner – Bristol Sport – and would coincide with the planned £45m redevelopment of the stadium’s West Stand immediately after the 2015/16 playing season.

The development saw the stadium upgraded to a state-of-the-art 27,000 capacity stadium, with the solar PV installation predicted to reduce the facilities carbon emissions by 20% whilst also reducing its energy costs by £150,000 over 20 years.

The PV installation was funded by Bristol City Council via a Power Purchase Agreement which they are offering to all companies in Bristol in attempt to achieve their target of reducing the City’s carbon emissions by 40% by 2020 (compared to 2005), whilst also reducing the City’s energy usage by 30% in the same period. By 2050, the Council also target the City’s energy supply to be supplied entirely by renewable energy.

Helen Holland, Cabinet Member for Place with responsibility for Energy, said:

“One of the Mayor’s campaign promises was to put Bristol on course to run entirely on clean energy by 2050. The City Council can’t achieve this by ourselves, so working with partners like Bristol Sport is going to be essential if we’re going to hit our goal”.

“Ashton Gate is such an important venue for football and rugby fans in Bristol. Working with Bristol Sport during their amazing transformation of the stadium sends a really strong message that it makes commercial sense for high energy consuming businesses to install renewables onsite, and Bristol City Council can help with that.”

The solar PV array consists of 460 Vikram 255W panels and is set to generate over 96 MWh every year, with 100% of this energy expected to be used onsite. The system was installed by a 4-man team in 7 days, working around the busy schedule of the stadium development that needed to be completed in time for the start of the 2016/17 season in August.

In addition to the solar PV installation, the new efficient stadium development boasts heat pumps, low water consumption taps, air-to-air heat recovery and low energy lighting.

The PV installation at Ashton Gate is the latest project that EvoEnergy have worked on for Bristol City Council having also recently installed systems for them at the M-Shed museum, the council offices at 100 Temple Street, Bristol Library and St Matthias Pupil Referral Unit.
